Discover Italy’s iconic capital – a time capsule of centuries old history and a chic city break of fashion, frivolity and fabulous food…

Holidays to Rome are as impeccably composed as the thousands of desirable addresses you’ll stumble upon in a city that celebrates history, art, fashion and food in style. The French gifted Rome the stately open-air Spanish Steps, Emperor Vespasian commissioned the world’s most breathtaking amphitheatre in back in AD 72 and the Vatican, now a country in itself, began life in the 4th century as a basilica built over St Peter’s grave. Expect Old Masters housed in private galleries, centuries old history inside fresco-filled churches and stories of bloody gladiator battles and lavish temples dedicated to Olympian Gods. These well-preserved ruins provide a jaw-dropping backdrop to a thoroughly swish city – la dolce vita lived out in Renaissance piazzas, gilded bars and Via Condotti’s high-end fashion.

Rome holidays are as photogenic as your wildest dreams and it does well to walk the ancient sites of the Pantheon and Palatine Hill but also stop and linger a while. There’s the suited and booted sipping espresso in 18th-Century cafes, vespas zipping past ornate piazzas and the glam squad navigating cobblestoned streets in heels with ease as passeggiata unfolds. Roam pretty streets with cut-to-order pizza slices, savour Instagram-worthy gelato, take aperitivo hour in Piazza Navona and dine rooftop, Michelin starred, with fairytale Colosseum views.

Tell us you want to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain and we’ll agree you must, but also recommend a late night return as the stone glows gold in the moonlight. If you’re inspired by movie scenes set in Rome we’ll put you in the heart of Villa Borghese, Piazza del Popolo and the Mouth of Truth in the portico of Santa Maria in Cosmedin Church. Or ask us about the Colesseum and we’ll share secrets of the Third Tier underground tunnels and also suggest walking at dusk behind Palazzo dei Senatori to see the ancient Forum ruins illuminated after dark.

A complete 5 star hotel in Rome with magnificent dining options such as our panoramic Michelin-starred restaurant

Hassler Roma is a legendary, luxury five star hotel in Rome’s City Center located at the top of the Spanish Steps. Hassler is a residence and a luxurious sanctuary meticulously created to give the most memorable experiences of the Eternal City. Situated in the heart of Rome’s historic city center, the Hassler is one of the best 5 star hotels in Rome.

Perched above the iconic Piazza di Spagna, this storied hotel overlooks Rome’s most elegant shopping district, centred around the boutique-lined Via dei Condotti. For guests who don’t want to navigate through the crowds on the Spanish Steps, the Hassler’s private electric car can whisk you directly down the hill to your favourite designer artelier. Hotel Hassler is also within walking distance to several city sights—including the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and Villa Borghese—and many of the upper-floor rooms and suites, and the penthouse restaurant, boast sweeping views over the city rooftops and church domes.

The Hassler celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2018, marking five generations of the Wirth family at its helm. Over the past few years, the hotel has been steadily updating its lavish, if somewhat stodgy, décor of dark oak, veined marble and potted ferns under the impeccable eye of Astrid Schiller Wirth. The latest renovation is the lobby, a stunning Art Deco-inspired space of chocolate-brown lacquered wood, black granite and sleek brass tempered by an original Murano chandelier, rediscovered stained glass windows and flawless Ciaffoni floral design. The overall effect is a contemporary, sophisticated space that remains true to its Belle Époque origins.

For a taste of Hassler’s historic opulence, settle in with the fur-bedecked clientele at the adjacent Salone Eva for a drink. You’ll be surrounded by a sumptuous, though predictable, triumph of tufted velvet, thick carpets and bevelled mirrors that makes one rather hope that Schiller Wirth turns her exacting gaze here next.

The modern black, white and red Presidential Suite Trinità dei Monti is said to be especially favoured by Karl Lagerfeld, and the Penthouse Villa Medici Suite has retained its original wood panelling and sweeping private terrace, but boasts an updated look and amenities (including bulletproof glass). You don’t have to spring for a suite to enjoy the refined comfort and service of the Hassler; even Classic and Deluxe rooms have a soothingly elegant atmosphere, with particular attention paid to perfectly soundproofed triple-glazed windows, upscale mini bars, a pillow menu, nightly turndown service, and marble and mosaic bathrooms (some with whirlpool tubs) stocked with the hotel’s own Amorvero products.

The Hassler’s Michelin-starred Imagò has been the hotel’s flagship restaurant for the past decade, where chef Francesco Apreda serves Italian-fusion cuisine each evening in the sixth floor panoramic dining room that has one of the city’s most spectacular views.

The classily opulent Eden sets the bar for high-end luxury in Rome.

File under ‘the best of both worlds’. The Eden is raised aristocratically above the fray near the top of the Spanish Steps, which gives it breathtaking views over the whole centro storico to St Peter’s and beyond – especially from the rooftop bar/restaurant and breakfast room. But at the same time, it’s just a 10-minute walk from the buzz, sights and shops of Piazza di Spagna.

Before its Dorchester refit, the Eden was the most understated of Rome’s luxe hospitality palaces. That’s no longer quite true – there’s plenty of gold and marble on view now. This said, the design by French architects Bruno Moinard and Claire Betaille is never less than tasteful.

There’s no such thing as a small room at the new Eden – during the revamp, room numbers were cut from 121 to 98 to give more space, with 33 of those being suites (four signature). Designers Moinard and Betaille made the right call in going for a more subdued palette in guest rooms vis à vis the more opulent communal spaces, but all the detailing is top drawer. Bathrooms are a tad more bling, with lashings of gold and sparkly white marble.

High windows ensure plenty of natural light, with other bonus points including Bottega Veneto amenities, Bang & Olufsen televisions and sound systems and the (admittedly slightly complex) option of controlling just about everything in the room from an iPad.
