Discover a golden era of Gothic palaces and Venetian romance on holidays to Venice as you glide by gondola through the floating city…

Sipping macchiatos for breakfast, stopping for cicchetti come lunch and drinking cocktails created by George Clooney at the Hollywood A-list’s favourite waterfront hotel; it’s easy to fit into the Venetian way of life – relaxed, car-free and somewhat otherworldy. Come summer, Venice heaves with tourists around Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge, but slink off to tiny fairytale alleyways and you’ll discover hidden treasures like one of the last few shops in the city where oars are still handcrafted for gondoliers and the almost secret church of San Vidal where world-class chamber concerts are held near-on nightly.

Venice holidays are as much about huge marble palaces as they are about getting lost in a maze of storybook canals and pretty bridges, stopping for great food, music and gelato along the way. After all, the city is nicknamed La Serenissma (serene) for a reason.

We’ve seen the Titian masterpieces inside Galleria del Accademia, admired the opulent Gothic architecture of Doge’s Palace, watched opera beneath the jaw-dropping ceiling of La Firenze and taken midnight walks along San Marco pier when the city silences all but the sound of gondolas bobbing up and down.

If you want to escape the stuccoes, frescoes and high ceilings, we can recommend the modern art at Peggy Guggenheim Collection, an iconic Bellini in Harry’s Bar or a Vaporetto ride to Burano Island where you’ll find those Instagram-worthy candy coloured houses and mouthwatering swordfish pasta.

This 15th-century palazzo occupies one of the loveliest spots on the Grand Canal, looking across to the magnificent Salute church, and has equally sumptuous interiors to match, with priceless antiques and frescoes, and a small but exquisite spa.

Overlooking the Grand Canal in the heart of Venice, The Gritti Palace boasts one of the most enthralling views of the lagoon city – from the island of San Giorgio Maggiore past landmarks Punta della Dogana and Santa Maria della Salute Basilica to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Dating to 1475, this noble palace and luxury hotel is a place of exceptional art and elegance that has retained its reassuringly intimate and familiar feel of a private residence. A historical treasure where heritage and culture blend with renewed Venetian style, The Gritti Palace is a refined version of its iconic self, offering attentive service, a delectable culinary experience and new avenues for relaxation and pleasure. From the artistic design of its signature suites and iconic terraces to the Gritti Epicurean School, Riva Yacht experiences and Riva Lounge and the Gritti Spa branded by Sisely Paris, The Gritti Palace is where multiple generations of elite global influencers gather to explore, taste and celebrate.

An ultra-luxurious hotel located just five minutes by boat from St Mark’s Square.

You don’t have to be in the heart of Venice to truly appreciate its beauty. Sometimes it’s better to enjoy a little time away from the crowds but still easily pop over to the city when you want. This Belmond hotel, which is located on the island of Guidecca, gives you just that. There are very few, if any hotels that have a pool in Venice due to size and the nature of the city; the Belmond hotel has an Olympic sized pool in its extensive grounds. And as you laze waterside, attentive hosts will be on hand to cater to your every whim whether that’s a refreshing drink or a light snack. There are also plenty of shaded spots to head to in the gardens, some with beautiful views out over the water, and there’s even a tennis court in the grounds. The interiors are pretty special too with one-of-a-kind antiques furnishing grand spaces, dark wood accents and light-filled lounges.

The rooms and suites all have exquisite classical design and sumptuously comfortable fittings. They have views of either the gardens or the lagoon and some even look over towards St Mark’s Square over the water – definitely our favourite rooms. Some rooms such as the Garden View Room, the Lagoon View Junior Suites and the Garden Suites feature a small balcony or terrace.

Each morning you can spend a while in bed before heading down to the delightful waterside Oro Restaurant to make the most of the extensive breakfast buffet. The setting is sublime with a gold-leaf gilded ceiling and a striking glass chandelier. Lunch is a casual affair and takes place at the al fresco Cip’s Club which has a deck over the water and Venice City views. This restaurant is also open for dinner and is one of the city’s most romantic spots for a dinner ‘per due’.

The Clooneys celebrated their nuptials in this 16th-century Grand Canal palace. Yet there is much more to say about this incredible property, which balances contemporary décor with museum-quality treasures in 24 luxurious suites. The Alcova suite is the star with its 18th-century frescoes by Tiepolo.

Set in one of the city’s eight, great monumental palazzos on the Grand Canal, Aman Venice embodies all that is sumptuous and sensuous about La Serenissima – but while its frescoed interiors sate appetites for grandeur, they invoke balance and harmony too. Rococo works of art are offset by the contemporary restraint of Jean-Michel Gathy interiors; private gardens and year-round wellness encourage calming introspection. Combining a reverence to the past and an appreciation of the present, local experts curate authentic, cultural encounters away from the crowds, reaching the heart of Venetian passions.
